I've been successfully displaying my own photo slideshows for years, but now I get an error when I press the "Display all" button: .  "Get Membership": You need a subscription..."

All I'm trying to do is display a slideshow of jpg images which I OWN, imported from USB.

What I've tried so far:

  • Sign out of SmartThings

  • Disconnect Network

  • Switch off at the plug, wait 10 minutes

  • Ensure all artwork is exact size, normal jpg, no metadata

  • Test with art that worked in the past

Nothing works!

I was about to purchase The Frame 2025 model but now I'm hesitating due to this issue. I really hope Samsung will revert to the previous state. It's nonsense to force customers to pay for something they're not interested in by restricting access to their personal content

Same problem here. Please see attached. For some reason, it won't allow me to post this in the body of the thread!Samsung Frame.jpg

@TheBlues1  Your script for Samsung support is very good, and I urge others to put the same pressure on them. Here it is for people to copy & paste:

"Has Samsung removed the ability to play a slideshow of my personal photos in Art Mode without a paid subscription? This was a major reason I purchased this product. If this was a deliberate change, I need that confirmed in writing. If it's a bug or error, I need to know that too. If you are not authorized to answer this, please escalate me to someone who is. I may need to explore further action if I can't get a clear explanation."

UPDATE:

I contacted Samsung (via their support website, and then via Twitter, and then via the SmartThings app, and then SmartThings Support form). They are all deflecting.

First they said I must purchase subscription, and closed the ticket.

Then I opened another ticket, and they have passed it on to "higher support" (no response yet).

SamsungHelpUK on Twitter said I must pay, then when I argued they said I should contact SmartThings

SmartThings said it's not their department and closed the ticket.

Thanks for the update Spike. Sounds similar to my experience on the phone. The TV people transferred me to the SmartThings department. The SmartThings folks told me they're just responsible for the SmartThings app and could help with things like uploading pics, but I would need to talk to the TV folks to help with the other stuff. They transferred me back to the TV department, who again tried to send me to the SmartThings department. Crazy!

I too have this issue and Iโ€™m furious! I have two Frame TVs in my home. The ONLY reason I bought them over other brands was to display my OWN PHOTOGRAPHY when not watching TV. They are my photos! The technology to display them costs nothing. This is the stupidest corporate decision Iโ€™ve ever seen. Itโ€™s bait and switch! You are destroying your brand! When CNET and Consumers Reports learn of this your sales will surely feel it. Reverse Course on this horrible decision.

Agreed! And it is part of a larger trend. Over the past several years, Samsung has quietly removed or limited a number of free features related to displaying your own photos in Art Mode on The Frame. These options are also a large part of the reason users like us paid the higher price for The Frame TV and affect anyone who uses personal images instead of paid Art Store content. Theyโ€™ve significantly reduced functionality. Here's whatโ€™s been lost:

Slideshow from My Photos (2025) - What we're talking about now.
You can no longer rotate through your own uploaded photos in Art Mode unless you have a paid Art Store subscription.
Before: You could set your personal photos to rotate automatically as a slideshow.
Now: Only one image can be displayed at a time unless you subscribe.

Ability to Favorite Items in My Photos (2024)
Samsung used to let you "favorite" images from your uploaded photos to create subsets
Before: You could use the "favorites" feature to control which images showed up in a given session. For example, you could favorite all your landscapes and just display them.
Now: This option is gone. All photos appear together, with no way to organize, sort, or filter. You had two display choices - in order or random (now you can't do either since they took away the display all option)

Reduced Cropping Flexibility
The ability to crop and position your uploaded photos has become more limited in recent versions.
Before: You had more granular control over cropping, which allowed your images to better fit a range of matte and frame styles.
Now: The cropping interface is more restricted or buried, reducing how much you can adjust layout and positioning.

Loss of Multi-Image Layouts (e.g., Triptychs)
It was once possible to upload multiple photos to appear as a single matted display, like a triptych.
Before: You could create composite images or multi-part displays with frames and mattes.
Now: This functionality appears to be disabled or no longer supported for user-uploaded content.

In the US there are now several alternative Art TV brands. I wouldโ€™ve assumed the increased competition would encourage Samsung to make the Frame better, but they seem to be doing the opposite.

I will definitely use this script when I call. Thank you!!

FYI: Check this specific reference to being able to view your own photos as a slideshow from Samsung's website (see item 5) - no reference at all to any requirement to have a paid subscription to the Art Store. This is just one of multiple pages on Samsung's site that has been there for years.

  1. Add personal photos from your phone with SmartThings
  2. Open your SmartThings app, select Devices -> Add device, or press + then Add device.
  3. Select your preferred method for registering your TV. Scan for nearby devices may be the easiest.
  4. After your TV is registered with SmartThings, select Art Mode.
  5. After selecting Art Mode, press Add Your Photos +, and select the photos you want to save on your Frame TV. After selecting your photos, press Save on The Frame in the bottom right corner. Note: If you want your photos to be a slideshow, select Slideshow when viewing the photos you selected to save to the Frame.

Compare that to this line from a page for Samsung's Latin market, that showed up this month (according to WayBack Machine records), which talks about the "Display All" function you use to create a slideshow.

"The 'Display All' function in The Frame puts all your artwork in a slideshow for display. It rotates out the art every minute by default, but you can change the rotation time in your settings. This feature is only available for subscribed members to the Samsung Art Store." (https://www.samsung.com/latin_en/lifestyle-tvs/the-frame/art-mode/)

So, it seems this is a very intentional and very recent change. Shame on you Samsung!
