Character limits of 140 in text message notification drop down reply box

In the notification shade from a received text message, why is there a limit into how long the reply can be? It's like 140 characters before no more letters will be allowed to be entered? Any idea why that is even a thing? Or how to get rid of it?

To the best of my knowledge, this limitation cannot be altered. You will have to open the app to type out longer messages.
