A Series & Other MobileHere are some of the key differences between RCS and SMS :
Features:
SMS:
Simple text only (no pictures, videos, etc.)
Limited to 160 characters per message
No encryption
Works over cellular network, so no data connection needed
Widely supported by all phones
RCS:
Richer features like sending pictures, videos, GIFs, location, etc.
Longer message limit (up to 8,000 characters)
Read receipts and typing indicators
End-to-end encryption for secure messaging
Requires data connection (cellular or Wi-Fi)
Supported by some, but not all, phones
Other differences:
Cost: Both are typically free to use, but some carriers might charge for data used by RCS.
Availability: SMS is widely available, while RCS is still being rolled out by carriers and phone manufacturers.
Compatibility: Both RCS and SMS messages can be sent between compatible devices, but if one person uses RCS and the other doesn't, the message might be converted to SMS, losing some features.
In summary:
Choose SMS for: Simple text messages that work on any phone, even without a data connection.
Choose RCS for: Richer messaging features like pictures, videos, and encryption, if both users have compatible devices and data connections.
