It does not appear that the stars transfer over. Possibly because Google messages puts the star in a different location than Samsung messages. IMO, they should transfer over since Google has the star functionality. The only thing I can suggest is whenever you have time to kill, go into the messages and start starring away, or when you need to find something specific, search by keyword.
