I have been using Android devices with cameras for 15 years and they have all had the option to switch the camera to silent-shutter.

I have recently started using my first ever Samsung device - S22 Ultra

There seems to be no option in the camera settings to switch the camera to silent shutter mode.

When I google this there are many links suggesting that it used to be possible with Samsung phones but has now been removed. Is that correct?

Can you please consider reinstating this very useful feature.

The only workaround I can see is to switch the whole phone to silent mode but that obviously has some drawbacks since I cannot then hear any alerts or calls.

Thanks

@Mojorising It is in Camera settings.

  1. Open the Camera
  2. Click the Gear icon in upper left
  3. Turn off the option "Shutter sound"

Thanks LongHiker

There is no option Shutter Sound in camera settings on my phone

From googling it seems that this option does exist on some phones and does not exist on others. I am not sure if it is a geographical variation.

My phone is

S22 Ultra

OneUI 5.1

Android 13

Camera Version 13.1.01.28

My phone is an Australian phone

Is there an alternative camera app that I can install?

@Mojorising Having a phone from Australia definitely could be the issue. This discussion group is for US Samsung products and services. You should locate the Samsung site for Australian products and ask for suggestions there.

Some countries, I have read in the past, actually outlaw turning this particular sound off.  Not sure why, but this might be why the option is missing in specific countries or regions.

The only reason I can think of as to why it could be outlawed in some countries is to prevent people from taking inappropriate pictures (like up a skirt) of an unaware victim.

It is only outlawed in the upskirting hotbeds of Japan and Korea

It is not outlawed in Australia

Blocking the option to Australia's users could be perceived as a diplomatic slur on the fine upstanding Australian character which could jeopardise international relations

Suggest Samsung look at revising the firmware for the phones shipped to Australia if it is blocked at that level or else revise the phone camera software in a patch release for all Australian users.
