Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

Agreed. Bring back ALL the AOD settings from the S23!

I agree. My AOD, which is my bedside clock is way too bright. I couldn't sleep last night. The only option was to turn it off and then I can't check the time.

I'm contemplating returning my phone due to this change

We absolutely have to have a manual AOD brightness slider like on previous phones and Android versions. Why would Samsung take features away? This is supposed to be the most customizable OS on smartphones.

AOD is way too dim for notifications, to the point of useless during the day. This is where the brightness slider comes in. Please add back, Samsung.

:hundred_points::double_exclamation_mark: That was literally one of the very FIRST things I noticed when getting the S24 Ultra. I hate when they remove beloved features/options with the intent to simply or optimize efficiency. Instead of having the default settings be set to optimize battery efficiency with the option to manually set brightness, they instead merged the brightness of AOD and the main display into one according to samlover article šŸ‘‡

https://samlover.com/2024/01/29/galaxy-s24-misses-manual-aod-brightness-control/

And I understand if they didn't want to give manual control with the "Show lock screen" enabled in AOD as that being set to full brightness all day would be a far greater impact on battery life compared to the traditional AOD but AT LEAST give us the manual brightness OPTION when DISABLING the "Show lock screen" feature.

And again I also understand if they are trying to keep the price as low as possible on newer models by downgrading or completely removing a particular hardware feature on newer models because it's under utilized but it's another when it's literally just a software code meaning it costs and no extra money to leave that option on.

SAMSUNG!! PLEASE, BRING BACK MANUAL BRIGHTNESS CONTROL ON AOD!!!

Received my S24 Ultra and noticed colors being washed out on home screen and apps. Also noticed that it's not as bright as my s23 ultra. I've checked all settings and all my settings is maxed out to give maximum brightness and color. Vivid is on, power saving is off, etc. something is definitely wrong and it seems to be software related. Anyone else seeing this in their s24 ultra?

A ton of people are complaining, going back to as far as the S10 having a better quality picture / color contrast. I'm debating sending mine back, and keeping my S21 Ultra

Debating sending mine back as well. There's something wrong with the color palette and dull colors. Idk but this post is 100% accurate. I hope there's a resolve for this
