Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! 🙂

I’ve tried to get used to it. I just don’t think I can. Even an iPhone allows you to boost your saturation. If Samsung knew this they’d probably would’ve included this option. It seems they’re so desperate to imitate Apple they stopped listening to their customers. I am deciding today if I’m going to return my ultra.

I don't believe that red color should look orange, and it's more true color.

Same goes for all other colors.

I Have monitor, calibrated for graphical design, and red on monitor looks like red, not orange

I've switched from a S22 ultra to S24 ultra and hit right into the same issue. Washed up colors everywhere, really really annoying. I've got a home screen with a sunset and the colors are grayish on s24u while the redish of sunset are perfect on my s22u. Sad but true.

Still playing with the settings, hoping for better colors, so far disabling eye comfort shield seams to create some better colors, still not as good as s22u, but better.

When you go from a 99% DCi-P3 on the color spectrum to 86%. It’s difficult to tweak it until you’re satisfied. I was looking for 4k wallpapers and was so disappointed in how they all looked dull. Frustrating!

Im seeing alot of conflicting reports regarding this being intentional vs there being a software patch for the vivid display issue. Whats confusing to me is that if this new software results in having more muted colors will this be pushed out to all phones? In addition why are none of the youtube videos comparing the S22 or S23 to the S24 mentioning the lack of color saturation. Its glaringly obvious putting my S22 and S24 ultra side by side that the color depth is better on the S22. How could none of the reviewers mention this?

Yes, i will never believe anything YouTube content providers say about Samsung after this! Seriously, they get a free phone to review, then lie to their audience... Shame on them!

I agree 100 percent. They get free phones and they just want people to watch there videos to make money. One day Don't Buy the phone, the next day Buy it. There all full of BLEEP!!

If this is Samsungs new philosophy, will the vivid mode also be muted on the S22 and S23 models as well?
