S24 Display Quality & AOD Missing Options

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! 🙂

Hi Barry, just wanted to share this with you. It's a video of a tech reviewer addressing what he believes to be the issue. Also, Samsung replied back to my error report. Seems like we might be getting an update. Check them out! Hopefully, they don't take forever with the update. They'll probably want to have this figured out before the 31st when the S24 series becomes available without pre-orders.

Same here in terms of color saturation. Tones seem flat especially when next to my s22 ultra, and tweaking natural/vivid changes literally nothing.

Exactly! It's one thing to provide a "Natural", more matte, option for users. It's another for the "Vivid" option not to work for those that prefer vibrancy and more saturation. Since they provided both options, hopefully, that means Samsung intended to give their customers the option and will address these issues in a timely manner. Otherwise, they are about to get an INSANE amount of returns and they have massive PR issue on their hands. Rightfully so.

Matte vs Glossy displays. Warm vs Cold. The only thing I see wrong is the green tint.

I feel so old that people have forgotten what a matte display does.

Definitely seems to be a split preference between users. I think the main issue is that the "options" are not working properly. The "warm" vs. "cold" settings on my phone do nothing. Also, you are correct, this green tint is very noticeable. I wonder if the tint is making the colors seem even more muted.

Not the matte display..only the ultras have the matte glass...users of the s24 and s24+ are reporting the same issues

As someone mentioned.

Glossy offers better picture quality but suffers from glare/reflections. Matte diffuses the light across the surface, which reduces glare/reflection. Problem is, it works both ways, also distorting the image that you see.

Glossy will give you a clearer, more vibrant picture, while matte will do better in rooms where you cannot control the light at 100%.

Smudges, prints, and scratches are less noticeable on matte displays. Not to mention eye fatigue is reduced.

Thank you for the explanation. Hopefully, Samsung can fix the green tint and the screen mode for Vivid vs. Natural. It appears as if they intended to give users the option, otherwise why include it. They need to at least address that a lot of customers are providing "feedback" and go from there.

The green tint is just about the best they can do. Even with warm->cold settings, it isn't going to do much since the display is matte.

Same here. Very noticeable. S23 has Better screen brightness. Very disappointing Samsung
