Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

Thank you for the link. I just emailed the office of the CEO. I have asked that Samsung please provide an official response to everyone who has bought the S24 series and is concerned about the screen and whether or not a software update will be provided to correct the vivid issue.

Is there a fix that was publicly addressed by samsung or am I going to have to return my S24 today?

Samsung has lost their goddamn mind. If One UI 6.1 update does the same thing to older phones as well then I hope they get the real wrath of consumers.

Likely they will not release this to older device until the kinks get ironed out on the S24 series.

But they acknowledged that it is intentional and not a bug.

For those who think this is Natural, I am the first to admit that there is a problem with color saturation and I always use the Natural mode. Look at this picture of the S23 Ultra at the top the iPhone is below and how the S23 Ultra loses its color saturation.

You can also see a post on X describing the problem

The fact remains that the consumer no longer has a choice:

- old selection Vivid as in Samsung Galaxy S23 and before
- current selection

As previously indicated, my device has already been returned. I still hope that Samsung issues a clear press release about their new policy. There are alternatives that I don't want to think about yet: Apple with their wide notch at the top... so 2018.. ppff no!).

This response from Samsung does not make any sense. Why would you offer a natural and vivid screen color setting, if the vivid setting was now going to be designed to look the same as the natural setting. Why would you take away the impact of the vivid feature that so many people loved? I'm so disappointed. I will be returning my S24 Ultra. This really makes no sense that Samsung would take away the vivid option, when in the display settings a user can choose if they want natural look or a vivid look. This is very frustrating. Samsung you're making a huge mistake not listening to your loyal base of Samsung smartphone buyers. Most people here have bought Samsung phones for years, and now you're turning away from them to try to be more like Apple and their screens. What a terrible move to disenfranchise the very loyal base of customers you have, who stick with you, even though they are given grief by iPhone users all around them constantly, but still stay loyal to Samsung. Now you're giving us reason to move away from you and go with someone like Google Pixel or Apple.
