Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

Yeah, I've seen some content creators in YouTube mentioning this problem, there's a software update on the way, also there some speculation that this issue that S24 Ultra users have could also be due to their " privacy screen" feature, if that's really such a thing, or something else.

I turned off my eye comfort shield, and it's looks much better to me with the settings I have set

It will when you had eye comfort shield on and your eyes were adjusted to that. But if your eyes were conditioned to classic Vivid mode on a slew of Samsung devices before this debacle, it would feel like eye comfort shield is on and you can't turn it off šŸ™‚

Dear Samsung,

I just got your S24 ultra and was very excited to boot it up... but to find out that everything looks washed out and dull using the vivid mode setting

Looking online, everybody seems to be hating this phone (and possible returning it). If it's truly a software and not a hardware issue, correct the color pallet back to the what it was on older devices. Nobody asked for this change or wants it. Even if it sacrificing color accuracy, people want the more "vibrant" colors experience with higher saturation. Even iPhone (using Samsung OLED) has more vibrant colors than this phone does. I will most likely be returning this phone and switching to another brand.

From my understanding they're not fixing it. Bwan1011 put it perfectly, if I spend $1500 on a phone I want to feel satisfied, and I don't. It's not even only because of the screen either. The ai features are kinda eh and after 2025 we have to pay for them. It also didn't seem faster than my previous gen phone. So then what am I left with, just a flat screen with an arguably worse display for that money, I just had to return it, and I'm a huge Samsung fan. Definitely done with them, I was kinda tired of em anyways so time to try something new!

Yeah, I will not upgrade my S22U unless Samsung fixes this.
