Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

The S24 home page icons compared to my S10+ are so drab dismal and lifeless It literally effected my mood making me feel sad. The vibrancy and color saturation of the vivid mode were uplifting to the spirit now washed out colors have the opposite effect for me irregardless of all the other impressive features that the phone has.

They are going to give option is update. Rome wasn't built in a day. S23u was bad too when it came out. Your comparing a phone with no updates yet to one with many revisions and updates.

That was never confirmed, trust me I thought that was the case. There were screen shots of convos with customer service reps promising that. There wasn't an official statement from Samsung from this. The only thing Samsung officially said was that we should use the phone with confidence and that the screen was carefully adjusted for the best comfort or w/e. That's why it looks different, we either take it or leave it.

My friend and I bought the s23 ultra at the same time about 6 months after it was released. We loved the phone. About a week later we got a software update and I noticed my colors got more vibrant. It was subtle but I did noticed.
Later that week I saw my friend and she said "did you get the update? Did you noticed that the colors look brighter?" And I was yeah, I noticed that also.
Makes me wonder if an update could change the colors on the s23 ultra, there shouldn't be a reason why it wouldn't happen on the s24 ultra.
By now I am getting used to the colors so is not too bad, but I do miss those punchy colors, specially since I use an s20 for work and the colors are rich and bright

Is this what ya'll screens look like on the S24 Ultra? Because the colors look fine to me. No, it's not as vivid/vibrant as previous models, but if ya'll screen looks like this, ya'll are exaggerating saying that the colors are dull and washed out.

So what's the point of vivid and natural when vivid mode is like adding 2% saturation only?? Vivid mode is supposed to look VIVID and NOT NATURAL

You took a screenshot of your homescreen?...... you do realize even if some one has a washed out display and yours doesn't this screen shot is going to appear different on your phone than theirs I'm literally scratching my head right now lol

Okay, you're right. I get what you're saying. I'm just trying to figure out if people have different issues and if people really do have dull and washed out colors because my screen and colors don't look washed out and dull. Less vivid/vibrant than previous models, but not washed out and dull.
And if anyone really wanted to check out what my screenshot looks like, just to see the color difference between their phone and mine, they could look on another device.

No, thousands of people are not noticing something that doesn't exist or that wouldn't have an obvious fix. The new Vivid mode display option is dull and uninspired in the S24 line-up and people are noticing. And if you read the thread (I know it's long) there's actually side-by-side comparison between a S24 device and older model, and it shows how dull and washed out the S24 is.
