Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

Pictures, displays, and plastics. Anything. Just Matte vs Glossy in general. S24 has a Matte display. S23 has a Glossy display. That's why they look different. They react different to reflections among other things.

What the **bleep** are you talking about. The glass is not matte. It's a software issue. The peak nit brightness was supposed to be 2600 vs 1750 on the s23 ultra. So it should be blowing it out of the water brightness wise

I know with any phone if you have a matte screen protector, it does have a dull effect.

You saying S24s screens are fine then?

@Bagz24 The S24 Ultra screen is matte bro and you can see it on camera and in pictures especially next to other glossy displays. Shoot there are videos out there explaining Matte displays and how even brightness and colors are affected which would never happen on a Glossy display. There is currently 0 technology out there for Glossy to remove reflections that Matte does. If someone did he would be a trillionaire by just having the patent. Also just wanted to add it takes more nits to illuminate a Matte screen than it does a Glossy screen. There's millions of videos out there that'll tell you this.

@buckethead_408 All I am saying 24 and plus aside those may need an update, but the changes between those will be significantly larger than the S24U because of the Matte display. You are not going to see S23U levels on the S24U. You may see a 10% improvement and people will still complain that it is not being fixed.

This guy points it out as well.

There are millions of Matte vs Glossy which is better videos and articles. If you read them you may see the similarties between them and the s23U vs S24U displays.

If you watch some of the reviews with those who didn't compare devices majority of them didn't notice. The ones that did were the ones that had other devices in their videos.

I noticed the display color right away. But Samsung said they were aware of the issue. We'll see if they fix it if not then it's whatever bro.

This video seems to suggest the matte screen is likely not the issue: https://youtu.be/rSkhC4AGhxg?feature=shared

There's a bug but no one seems to know exactly what it is. I've heard smart switch, comfort mode, vivid mode and extra low brightness enabled all can be responsible for this. Supposedly a patch for the screen and the camera is coming out on the 31st, so I would see how things turn out then.
