I've heard that swiping away apps actually is not a good thing to do and that I should keep them in my recents but which types of apps should I keep in my recents and which types of apps should I close? For example should I keep or swipe TikTok. What about Instagram? I use TikTok often, but not Instagram.

Just keep all of them open our phone is smart enough to automatically put to sleep apps if you don't use them

Is putting apps to sleep permanent? Or is it different from deep sleeping apps?

@Nikolas9264 If you swipe away an app, the only penalty is the time and effort to reopen it. It does not prevent the app from sending notifications.

I know and I've heard that drains battery and my phone will die faster compared to if I just keep them open

@Nikolas9264 "I've heard that drains battery and my phone will die faster compared to if I just keep them open"

That is not true. It is actually the other way around.

Think about this. If you swipe away all of your app, it is similar to you rebooting the phone. None of the apps are open. They aren't using RAM nor battery.

Yeah, but because these modern phones are good at handling apps in the background, it actually uses more battery just to reopen them.

@Nikolas9264 I think you would be hard pressed to prove that.

Let's say to open an app it takes "a_open" amount of energy.

Let's say that to keep an app open in the background, it takes "b_background" energy.

Since "b_background" continues to grow as you leave your phone powered up, "b_background" will eventually grow to surpass "a_open".

There's no reason to swipe away an app unless its misbehaving. Literally zero. Booting up an app from storage is an exponentially higher power draw compared to a backgrounded app. Why? Because RAM is volatile in nature, it is always drawing power from the system regardless of if its actively being used, whereas loading an app out of storage requires an increased power draw. When your system puts an app in the background on its own, its basically piggybacking on the power the ram already is drawing to keep the app semi-active, allowing for a more efficient resuming of the activity when you want it.

Closing an app won't cause you to miss notification, however, if an app isn't opened after enough time it can potentially be put into deep sleep automatically, which can and will cause missed notifications. I think you need to not touch the app for like a month, though.

While this shows a laughable knowledge of how memory works, you are only scratching the surface of what open apps use.  If an app is open then the processor has to devote time to the app, causing reduced performance in other apps, as well as power draw to keep the processor working on that task.  it is also constantly USING memory, and storage, as well as polling the wi-fi, Bluetooth, and cellular antennas (depending on the app).  To keep an app open takes loads of resources other than just the memory, and it is basic computing 101 to reduce the amount of things the system is using to run it more efficiently.
