990 Pro 2TB with heatsink disappears

Installed as 😧 drive earlier this year. While editing and saving a Faro Scene project with hundreds of millions (billions?) of points, the drive disappears from Windows file manager and the project hangs. Quickest solution I have found is to reflash BIOS, but I would prefer the drive doesn't disappear.

System:

Alienware Aurora R16 running Windows 11 Pro 1 year old

i9-14900KF

NVidia RTX 4080

64GB RAM

Kioxia 1TB SSD as C:

Over heating drive?  Direct air flow from fan on drive?

Running out of memory?

How much space available on C: for temporary files?
