QLED and The Frame TVs

In the last few weeks, Samsung updated the OS to the Frame TV and a function that I regularly used is no longer available. I'm writing in hope that someone can suggest a workaround (or if Samsung engineers read this, to bring the function back).

I have an Apple TV 4K media streamer for my Frame 55" 2022 TV. I'm assuming that other media streamers such as Chromecast, Roku, etc. would have a similar behavior that I am getting now post-OS update.

Prior to the update, I would be watching TV using the Apple TV 4K steamer, conclude for the evening, power off the streamer with the Siri remote, and the Frame would instantly go into the Art Mode and display artwork for 30 minutes (my settings) before the Frame would go to sleep. Post upgrade, I power off the streamer (Apple tells me the streamer goes to sleep, not powering off), but instead of the Frame displaying artwork, it is searching for a media source:

My only recourse now is to use the Samsung remote and manually navigate to the Art Mode and select the artwork, a multi-step process.

Is anyone else who is using a streamer experiencing this, and do you have a workaround?

Thanks,
David

Has anyone tried resetting their tv to default settings and then reconfiguring? Probably a bit of a n00b question, but I thought I'd check if anyone attempted a full hardware reset before I went through the painful process myself.

Yep! Reset to factory settings twice yesterday in fact.  And it didn't change a thing.

Adding yet another frustrated voice here.

I think the function might have been intentionally broken by Samsung. It could be the result of a broader business strategy aimed at affirming the company’s products and cementing its ecosystem, by progressively excluding other company’s products. If that’s the case, then there is not much we can do about it, other than telling them that we will go to the competition next time we need to purchase tech.

But let’s see whether they decide to put their company’s profits above their customers’ benefit.

You might be right - but I'm hoping that given it's a bit inconsistent, it may just be a coding error. Fingers crossed for the next update!

Ha, are you kidding? Like I will ever buy another Samsung TV after this. This is exactly how a company can  away their profit: by infuriating their customers. You’ve got a thread here of probably hundreds of customers that all paid extra for this TV that are now furious.

Do you know how many people have mistaken my TV for a piece of art? It’s in the dozens now. And I explained to them how it’s “The Frame” and that’s its main selling point. As of right now I guarantee the next time anyone asks me about this TV I will steer them as far away from Samsung as possible. I’ll probably explain this saga as an example of what a terrible company they are.

Let’s see how it works out for Samsung when thousands of angry customers each tell dozens of friends how awful Samsung and their products are. Honestly at this point short of an acknowledgement of the bug, an apology, and most of all a FIX, I will never buy another Samsung product.

I posted this on page 6 of this thread. I didn't get any takers, but wanted to repost here as my Frame TV works largely without any failure when transitioning from TV viewing to art mode after shutting off Apple TV.

I'm still willing to do so in exchange that we document the solution and share it with the community. It's not a fix (the rests with Samsung) but rather a workaround that works. Let me know if anyone is interested.

@david_weinberg One setting I noticed which differs on your menu to mine is “power off mode” under power and energy saving, which on your photo is set to “Turn off in current mode”.

However on my TV (which has the same problem of the Apple TV turning the TV off when it sleeps and entering art mode only working the first time this happens after the TV is turned on) this is set to “Remain in current mode when turned off”. Unfortunately on my TV this option is greyed out and trying to change it gives me an error message: “That function isn’t available”.

What version of the firmware is your tv running? (Mine is 1520). Is this a setting you can change or do you get the same message? Wondering if this text is a firmware version difference, or if another setting enables this to be changed?

Hey @mattheath,

You’re correct, my Frame TV power off mode is set for “turn off in current mode” and mine is greyed out as well. If you would like to follow my settings as my TV works largely without fail, maybe ask Samsung support how to change that and then we can go from there.

However, my TV is at version 1503 and I _locked it from future upgrades_.

I would like to add my vote for Samsung to either reverse this update or correct it.  At this point it is no longer a frame, only a TV that hangs on the wall.  Is there a way to back this update out?
