Computer: Model NP930QDB-KE1US (Galaxy Book 1 Pro 360)

Window 11 (with all the latest updates as of this post).

Thunderbolt port with SSD 500 GB and proper cable for thunderbolt performance.

Only get 25-30 MB/sec read or write ... very poor and way under the rated performance of 40 GB/sec.

I have tried several options with various disks/SSD, and SDXC chips and never get above basic USB C performance which should also be way faster than 30 MB/sec.

Ideas? Is this a defect in the laptops architecture?

t seems like you're experiencing significantly slower performance than expected on your Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 laptop, specifically with the Thunderbolt port and data transfer speeds. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially improve the performance:

  1. Check Cable and Connections: Ensure that you're using a certified Thunderbolt cable and that it's securely connected to both the laptop and the external device. Sometimes, using a faulty or non-certified cable can result in slower speeds.

  2. Update Thunderbolt Drivers: Make sure you have the latest Thunderbolt drivers installed for your laptop. Visit the Samsung support website and search for the latest Thunderbolt drivers compatible with your model and Windows 11.

  3. BIOS and Firmware Updates: Check if there are any BIOS or firmware updates available for your laptop. Sometimes, updates can improve hardware compatibility and performance.

  4. Check Power Delivery Settings: Some laptops may reduce Thunderbolt performance when running on battery power to conserve energy. Make sure your laptop is connected to a power source and check if there are any power-related settings in your BIOS or power management settings that could affect Thunderbolt performance.

  5. Check Thunderbolt Security Settings: Some Thunderbolt security settings might limit performance. Check the Thunderbolt security settings in your BIOS and ensure they're configured appropriately.

  6. Check for Software Interference: Certain software or drivers could potentially interfere with Thunderbolt performance. Try running the laptop in a clean boot mode to see if any third-party software is causing the issue.

  7. Test with Different Devices: Test Thunderbolt performance with different devices, such as external SSDs or monitors, to see if the issue is consistent across different devices. This can help determine if the problem lies with the laptop or the specific device.

  8. Contact Care: If you've exhausted these troubleshooting steps and are still experiencing slow Thunderbolt performance, it's a good idea to reach out to Samsung's customer care for further assistance. They might be able to provide more specific guidance based on your laptop model.

Regarding the rated performance of 40 GB/sec, it's important to note that the Thunderbolt 4 specification does support speeds up to 40 Gbps, but the actual achievable speeds can vary based on various factors including the specific implementation on the laptop, the devices connected, and the type of data being transferred.

Turns out my cable was defective .... went to local store and got a new Thunderbolt 4 cable and immediately got 900 MB/s improvement ... still not the 32 GB/sec as per the Thunderbolt 4 spec, but much improved. I dont think it is possible to get anywhere near the 32 GB/sec with a single disk ... maybe with a disk array with multiple disks the aggregrate could get up to 32 GB/sec.
