Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

Matte vs Glossy. I am willing to put money if you didn't compare side by side you wouldn't have noticed. Most people wouldn't.

Software can't fix a matte display. Personally I prefer a Matte display and wished more display manufacturers gave they option.

I noticed there was something off about the S24 Ultra screen colors the moment it turned on, without having to compare it next to any other screen. I am hopeful that Samsung will correct the color issues in a software update.

You're comparing a s23u that has a year worth of updates to a new release. They will work out early issues within a month or two. Give it a little time as the more capable things become the human adjustment take some time. All software may need to be adjusted by providers to operate correctly on new devices. If performance is even close or similar it will improve greatly in a short time.

Well, the concern most people have is whether it's a hardware (display panel or anti reflective coating) issue or a software issue. If samsung just puts out some kind of confirmation (simply a tweet will do) that it's a software issue and that it will be fixed via an update, I am sure people will calm down and wait for it. If they remain silent while people run out of their return window, then of course it creates unnecessary stress because no one wants to end up with devices with a hardware issue. I haven't opened the box yet. Heard rumors about a possible update on Jan 31st. Will wait and see how it goes before I decide to send it back. Samsung... if you are listening... by keeping silent you are making matters much worse. Hope you address this soon.

RE S24 ULTRA: The display colors are washed out compared to previous models. The display panel looks more like a LED panel versus an AMOLED panel. Colors are very dull. I don't think sending the phone back is going to do any good, as there seems to be the same complaints from virtually everyone. This issue needs to be addressed immediately.

Samsung has noted the issue and is working on the fix. If you do enough looking around you'll find the response.

Yep I posted on Twitter/X about this. Got mine Friday and noticed it after setting it up and then migrating everything over. I went back to my S23 ultra and noticed how much brighter and vibrant the colors are.
