Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

Exactly, they didn't even put a different message, just edited the existing one. Now it looks like that 150 people have liked that message and users are happy with the solution. And users can't see the edit history, new users will only anticipate that the solution is working as it has 150 likes.

In the event you might consider a slightly smaller option with most of what's in the larger Ultra aside from additional camera lens capabilities and larger battery, the S24+ display looks about the same as the S23+...

No it doesn't The s24 Plus does not look anywhere near the same as the s22 plus. It looks just as dull as that has 24 ultra

If this is true, it's a pity for Samsung. So their attitude is; it's not us its you. I've been a loyal and devoted Samsung mobil user for over 15 years, but this pisses me off. I think I'll return my S24 Ultra as well and switch to IPhone. Samsung had a good thing going, but the attitude that they know best what you the consumer wants spoils my loyalty. Goodbye Samsung.

What's also really frustrating is how there's like a million theories going around, and no definitive answer from anyone from Samsung. First I'm hearing it's software based, now it was intended ? Can we just get a final word because this along with the grainy screen some users have reported is making me want to just return this and keep my S22U. This launch is a fiasco

It seems Samsung has taken a bite of the poison Apple. They stood apart from the iPhone in many ways, and over the last several generations of the S series have improved and seemed to have closed the gap with its close competition. But lately, Samsung has slowly matched Apple. First, they took away the 3mm headset jack. Then, they removed the expandable memory SD card slot. Then they took the charging brick out of the box. All these things followed what Apple did first. Now, they want to mess with the screen colors to be more like the apple iPhone. So, what's it gonna be, Samsung? Follow your competition or be an industry leader?

I actually love the display. Yes, it is slightly different, but it is not a deal breaker for me. There is a break in the normal/vivid setting. And they are working on a fix for that, it's been said. But otherwise, there are more adaptive screen settings for this phone to help your eyes and to view better in brighter places. Overall, the phone is amazing despite the one downside, but again, it is not a deal breaker for me. I refuse to listen to any of the articles and things going around. Some people love it and others hate it. To each their own, but there is supposed to be a fix for the normal/vivid issue.
