Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

There is nothing wrong with the display. If you don't like how the astetics look, then yes, your best option is to return it. But Samsung doesn't have to fix something that some people consider brocken because they don't like how it looks .

Samsung does have to fix something that's broken. There's a reason a vivid mode exists. If I put my phone on a vivid mode the colors need to be VIVID. If I wanted a natural look I can put it to natural. If you like the way the display looks then good for you but don't come in here saying they don't have to fix anything just because you like it.

You seriously said everything I was gonna say. If you like the natural color pallete, feel free to leave it on the setting. To me, I can't see any difference swapping it from vibrant to natural (max brightness and I'm pretty sure I'm not color blind lol :))

So if there is two display options but it only one works and samsung refuses to fix it... then just get rid of the two display modes options

Lol they can tweak the software if they want to. And at the end of the day they're making these phones for us. The vivid setting should look different from the natural setting.

The display might be ok, but there is a bug. The fact that natural and vivid setting look identical shows that there is a problem with the settings. I really hope samsung fixes this issue

Nothing wrong with the display itself, perhaps. But a LOT wrong with the new Vivid mode color profile. Now if you do like the new Vivid mode, probably (if they address it at all) Samsung won't remove it, but just add back the classic Vivid as an option. Because, let's be reasonable, the original Vivid mode that has been on all devices since forever and what people expect to get when they purchase a Samsung, should just be there. And what a weird stance you take, defending Samsung corp like it's your job? wt

How do you explain the banding issues and grain? Are you a samsung employee? Looks like you're just defending samsung's **bleep**ty defective display.

Wasn't worth the risk of Samsung NOT fixing it, so I sent it back. If they do fix it eventually, I'll try again.

I had it inside the return box and everything but wanted to compare them one last time with the s22 ultra and this time put a third device next to them, my work iPhone 12. I see what they are doing. They want the iPhone look! When I put both galaxies on Natural they look exactly like the iPhone. When I put them on Vivid, the s24 ultra is a bit more vivid is in between the s22 ultra and the iPhone but at the same time retains the Natural look of the iPhone although more vivid. The s22 ultra is just way more vivid and too unrealistic. It's not the right colors. I think Samsung wants to be ziph9ne and have things look the way is meant to be seen. My conclusion is that there IS a difference between vivid and natural but it's less pronounced than prior models while it maintains a realistic look. At the same time I understand what people say that we need the option to put it it how we want like before. After completing this comparison I can't believe that I might stay with the device because it's not broken. Maybe Samsung listens to us and sends us an update to please everyone again. We'll see.
