Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

You may be right that Samsung had grown uncomfortable with their classic Vivid color profile. But then that profile is what they named "Vivid" and what customers have to come to expect to be the option (and default!) on their new devices. So to create a totally different color profile, and have it assume the name of an established and ubiquitous profile (namely, classic Vivid) is actually bait and switch. They should have provided the classic Vivid option (keep the name Vivid because, well, it is vivid) and give the new profile another name like "vibrant" or just replace the "Natural" profile, or whatever. It is clear from their approach that they tried to sneak in something else under the same name, like a trojan, and were wishing no one would complain. Well, that didn't happen and shouldn't have happened. The flack they're getting is exactly what they deserve. You can have more than 2 color profiles. They can provide 10. They just chose to take an established mode/profile away and they're harvesting the result of that right now.

Hi everyone,

I have moved from my S10 to to S24 and compared to the old device, the colors are extremely underwhelming and dull. It seems like switching to vivid colors in the display settings make almost no difference. It must be a problem and I don't think Samsung's response to this issue is justified.

I asked the same about the 24 Ultra. Apparently there's an update coming to fix this or not.
IDK but, I did find this interesting video this morning.
I want a vivid display & AOD Brightness because now? It's basically useless, so I agree šŸ‘

I had it inside the return box and everything but wanted to compare them one last time with the s22 ultra and this time put a third device next to them, my work iPhone 12. I see what they are doing. They want the iPhone look! When I put both galaxies on Natural they look exactly like the iPhone. When I put them on Vivid, the s24 ultra is a bit more vivid and is in between the s22 ultra and the iPhone but at the same time retains the Natural look of the iPhone although more vivid. The s22 ultra is just way more vivid and too unrealistic. It's not the right colors and we are just accustomed. I think Samsung wants to be iphone and have things look the way is meant to be seen. My conclusion is that there IS a difference between vivid and natural but it's less pronounced than prior models while it maintains a realistic look. At the same time I understand what people say that we need the option to put it it how we want like before. After completing this comparison I can't believe that I might stay with the device because it's not broken. Maybe Samsung listens to us and sends us an update to please everyone again. If not, then the company has made a their decision how their devices will look going forward. We'll see

Thank you for your comparison. I just came from S8+ and I wouldn't know the different but I am happy with my S24 Ultra. At least I don't have a pink screen like my S8+.

Hasn't there been speculation that s24's vivid profile is simply bugged? Also if they wanted to go with the apple display look they could just ~ oh right they actually have that feature as well in the s24 in the form of the "adaptive color tone" option

The anti-glare coating couldn't filter out the (true, classic) vivid mode/color profile. Change from Natural to Vivid and think about it. It's not the anti-glare coating of the glass which is used in other devices also.
