Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

My S24 Ultra received the latest update from Samsung, which provided a vividness slider and corrected the dull washed out color issue. My S24 Ultra screen colors are now much more similar to my S21 Ultra. Thank you Samsung for listening to your customers and making an update to correct the issue.

In my opinion, the problem was not solved for me. I hope they increase the accuracy of Natural mode and improve the color saturation in it correctly and have an option to control Gamma

My replacement phone has a grainier display than the original.

I wish I'd seen this thread before I splashed out on the S24, the colours are so drab.  My husband's S9 looks far superior in colour and vividness.  Please Samsung make this better soon or my phone is being returned.

The latest software update in my opinion falls short of all the hype Samsung promised they were going to fix. I noticed only a very tiny change in the screen vividness with the new vividness slider. The change is so minimal that its laughable. My older S22 Ultra still blows away the S24 ultra screen. However, overtime I'm getting used to the screen. But, its still a disappointment for Samsung. They have lost the screen battle of the smartphone market. As for the camera, well the colors have improved but I still have photos that get over corrected with this AI optimization Samsung is pushing. The photos frequently get to bright or the colors become to saturated and over corrected after you take the picture. This happens more often with indoor photos in what I would call medium light. Outdoors in bright light will only happen occasionally. I have also noticed while using the 50mp lense that I will have areas of line distortion if the subject being photographed has background with a very complex pattern such as wallpapers or a complex pattern on a shirt. This happens most in post AI photo optimization with the 50mp lens. I spend more time after I've taken a series of photos editing them to my liking. Never had to do this with my older S22 ultra. Why isn't there an option to be able to turn off all this AI junk if I choose not to use it? Another thing I've noticed is this sudden screen jump and repositioning of the video when you zoom in and out from 1x to 3x zoom and back again to 1x. Along with that I also noticed the colors and brightness of the video change while zooming in and out on your subject. All this happens because of the camera switching lenses when zooming. This ruins your video as it's very noticeable on playback. Unfortunately the S24 Ultra is going to be ripped apart by tech reviews when the new Apple 16 pro max is released. Unless Samsung makes an unpressidented effort to address all the lousy AI bugs on the S24's, the phone will be go down as one of Samsung's failed devices that's plagued with problems. And for a $1200 to $1600 price tag that's got to hurt sales.

Yep the 24 ultra is a disappointment. Even when I compare it to my old phone S21 ultra.

The A.I is ruin almost every photo I take indoors.

I Agree with you. I've notices that using 30x zoom was way better as it was ...now 30x zoom pictures look like.
I was happy to see an improvement with the 30x zoom compared to my S22U.
So definitely nothing better...

I dont understand either i am really really off at samsung !
The camera is STILL Shifting when zooming.
The color are even MORE WASHED OUT now. tbh i have never seen such dull and flat pictures out of a phone !
It still has trouble with a tiny bit of movement when taking pictures.
Zoom is also worse than before.. if i compare to my s22 ultra its just... its just sad.
I am just angry... for real. its alot of money for a phone ! Its 2024 !

Yup, still horrible pictures send in error reports ASAP. We all need this fixed. I also agree with the comment above my s21 Ultra didn't have any of these issues.
