Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

Online reviews can indeed be a mixed bag, and itā€™s essential to consider various perspectives when evaluating a device like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Letā€™s break down some aspects related to the screen, AI features, and other concerns youā€™ve raised:

  1. Screen Brightness and Vivid Mode:

    • The Galaxy S24 Ultra has a brighter screen than the S23 Ultra.
    • However, some users find the Vivid mode on the S24 Ultra to be washed out and dull.
    • Online reviews might not highlight this discrepancy.
  2. AI Features and Exclusivity:

    • The S24 Ultra introduces exciting AI features.
    • Thereā€™s concern that these features might be a one-year free trial and could become paid services later.
    • Similar AI features are already coming to older Samsung phones.
  3. Other Issues:

    • Some users report faulty cameras, poor battery charging, and a green line on the screen.
    • Unfortunately, reviews donā€™t always cover these issues.
  4. Samsungā€™s Official Stand:

    • Samsung hasnā€™t publicly addressed the dull screen issue.
    • As loyal customers, we hope Samsung continues to improve and address concerns. :mobile_phone::sparkles:

S23 Ultra is currently the superior phone. So unhappy with the new S24 Ultra shopping to purchase the S23 Ultra and prices are much higher to purchase the older phone.

I disagree enjoy my s24U just as much as my s23U. I traded specifically for what it has to offer.

That's 100% how I feel about it as well. I haven't sent my S23U in yet, but it's been in a drawer and hasn't been turned on since the morning the S24U arrived. Nothing that I miss about the S23U, so it will be a painless trade in

@Tidbitty I agree. I came from S22U and I currently have the S24U. Have not encountered the issues that others are reporting.

Samsung you really are started to **bleep** off your customer base making the S24 series colors like Apple. It's one thing to copy their UI but to complete lose your soul and make your screen less vibrant and colorful is ridiculous.

WE DID NOT ASK FOR THIS!!!!!

Fix vivid mode now! Android is all about choice. Don't give us this bs crappy explanation that you did it for a safer viewing experience. You're copying Apple. That's what you're doing when you made your screen dull and more natural looking. We like and love the vibrant oversaturated colors. That's why you buy your phones.

At the very least fix Vivid mode so we have a choice. We stuck buy you when your phones exploded, when you were making **bleep** phones loaded with carrier software, and the countless **bleep** you've experienced with like edge to edge screens.

Don't being so rigid and listen to your customers. We don't want this crappy display color science you've adjusted. Fix it now and release a statement and let us know when the software fix is coming.

For us who pre-ordered you're really screwing us over because I am keeping my S23 Ultra and I have only a couple of days until I have to return it. Listen listen listen to your customers. We are mad as **bleep** spending $1400 for this inferior looking screen. It's actually so bad that the iPhone 15 Pro Max screen looks slightly better.

Fix it or this is another stain on your already checkered past in mobile phones.

Signed,
Almost Everyone.

A handful of fanatics not almost everyone. Just because a bunch of people don't like it doesn't mean almost everyone doesn't like it. It had record number of sales with little to no returns. If it bothered people that much they should just return it. It'll speak volumes.
Also if they pushed out the update and it messes up your device will you be willing to eat it because you bottom was so impatient to get it corrected?

No it's not a handful of fanatic it's a lot more. They market and are known for their vivid displays. This is a hallmark of their marketing. The problem is that people like the features and preordered. Record number of sales haha with no returns where are you getting those numbers.

If the pushed out an update and it broke it that would be on Samsung. It's purposely done and they have been making excuses. The fact that vivid mode doesn't work or barely makes a difference.

Don't tell people they are impatient when there is a return window. So you even understand that? People who pre-ordered have only so much time before they have to return their previous device. So yeah maybe you should think about that. I meant everything. A handful haha clearly you have not been on the forums and seen all the articles and media coverage about it. Sit down.

Yes it's a handful when you taking in the millions. If they sold 100M and 10% would be considered a handful.

Why not return it then? Why wait? That actually speaks more volumes than waiting for an update. As I said before if the update breaks the device would you be willing to wait for a fix for that, or would you complain some more and wait past the window for that to get fixed? All I see if people thinking emotionally and not rationally...

If they sold 100 million so you're just throwing numbers out there..

People who pre-ordered especially got the $150 Best Buy gift card and other incentives... that's the whole point in the upgrade. People want to keep them. If you return the S24 or any model of it before you lose those incentives.

You're speaking about hypotheticals IF IF IF IF. Let's speak reality. If you pay $1400 for a phone and there is an expectation set by Samsung themselves then they should meet those expectations. Just because not everyone is complaining doesn't make it a non issue. It clearly is and it's yet again another blunder. This is very Apple-ish. "YOU" don't get to set that threshold of what is a big issue or not... That's not in your purview of pay grade
It's an issue when Samsung gave people the option of Vivid mode for years and even highlighted it for years YET they provide the same option but it barely works. If there wasn't a Vivid mode and Samsung didn't pump many many hours and marketing into how bright and punchy their displays are then people wouldn't have a leg to stand on to be upset. It's a night and day difference between the S23 previous models display and the S24. The difference is very obvious.
