I'm trying to connect my external SSD disk to my tablet but the tablet is not recognizing the disk as a storage device but as charging device and is not allowing changing the settings on the USB connection menu. It's quite disappointing that it happens with a brand I used to trust.

Try Settings->Developer Options->Default USB Configuration->Transferring Files
To turn on Developer Options go to Settings->About Phone->Software Information->tap "Build Number" 7 or 8 times and the option will be enabled.
