Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

I tried the S24 Ultra, but the screen and the pictures all have washed out colors so I returned it today. My S22 Ultra is much better!

When switching between vivid and natural in the s24 Ultra, there is infact a change happening, but it's barely recognizable. Try it with the other test pics as well and you can observe it . This means that the calibration of vivid mode is incorrect or has been toned down for whatever reason. However, I did notice that the dull colors are mainly visible in the homescreen and the native screens of the UI. I played some of those 8K videos in the YouTube app and the Colors are really vibrant. In fact the youtube app itself looks vibrant including the dark areas. As soon as you minimize the app and return to the homescreen, you instantly notice the dullness. Can someone else also pls. test this? If this is the case, then it cannot be a hardware issue. I think it's a software issue in the color calibration of the OneUI elements. When apps like youtube are opened, they seem to override this. I've already exhausted 5 days of my 14 days return period. I hope samsung pushes out an update to fix this in the next 2 days. Otherwise I am thinking of sending it back. Samsung, if you are listening, have you heard of damage control... DO SOMETHING PLEASE!!!

I just hung up from talking with tech support, he said he just received an email from Samsung higher ups telling them nothing is wrong with the screens and there is no plan to fix it.

It looks like Samsung is saying that this is how it's supposed to be. šŸ˜

And also, if you go into Advance Features and turn on Video Brightness to "Bright" for those installed apps such as YouTube, Video Player...etc. There's absolutely no change.

To everyone that's been unhappy with the display on the S24s, Samsung has decided not to fix the dull display issue. The Samsung rep Justin who previously commented that they are investigating this issue has now changed the comment explaining that the colors are meant to be like this by design. He also shared a link on advanced display settings if you want to change things around. I can't be the only one that's extremely frustrated with this. The article shared literally has a section that shows how you can change the mode from natural to vivid for more saturated colors, a mode that is clearly broken on the S24 since it doesn't do anything. How can a display from a 5 year old galaxy device look better yet this is by "design". I can't even return this phone anymore since I already sent back my S22 Ultra but there's no way I'm keeping this device if they don't end up doing anything about it.

Well then why do they have a toggle to vivid mode option in settings if it does nothing?

It's literally broken and they refuse to acknowledge it
