I hear you. There's nothing crazy about your post. Not to worry. We're never going to get half a chance to miss trolling on the net. It's the price we pay for the "convenience." Sorry the s**t fell on you this time.

I have a samsung ht-j5500w blu ray player which was also killed by the Samsung update, we have been without tv now for almost a week... please remove the "Solved" classification to this thread, it is not solved and every day we check for an update.. clearly you cant push a firmware fix over wifi so at least provide a downloadable file we can use with a usb.

I am in San Jose, California and open to legal representation to contact me if this is not solved.

I have a samsung ht-j5500w blu ray player which first cut out the sound and now it will not play a DVD. It just keeps recycling on the TV.

Just for the heck of it I located a Dec 12, 2017 firmware file on the Samsung Support website.  I downloaded it and unzipped a .RUF file whatever that is.

Copied it to a USB device and tried to install using the instructions on the support page for my BD-J5700.  My hope was to get my player back to an earlier software version.  From there you should be able to disable any future updates.

Long story short, it didn't work.  To update the software the player must come to a steady on state where you see the start screen on your TV and go to Settings>Support>Software Update.  Because the player starts and stops so quickly, you never have a chance to maneuver around the start screen.

I suspect this may be the dilemma for Samsung.  You can't do a wifi or USB update if the unit never comes on long enough.

I thought I was the only nut who tried the same tactic. Not saying you're a nut. But the RUF file didn't do a thing. Probably for the exact reason you posited.
I even burned a CD and loaded that. NFG!

Hope springs eternal. But in my case I'm gonna toss it into Lake Washington soon if our friendly Koreans don't respond with a usable fix pronto. I'm for instant gratification and running out of ways to sublimate my lust for movies while under lockdown.

I guess I have become a nut, but that's due to the lockdown.  And if I can't watch a movie, might as well try to hack the firmware.  I'm tired of watching reruns of 1980's NBA play off games in standard definition.

I was going to try burning the file to a CD next, you saved me the bother, thanks.  My experience with the techs that are supposed to solve these problems is they seem to think they know more than us, and don't thoroughly read the users detailed explanations of what's going on.  Typically they tell you, "Just do a hard reset", or send you a file that you can't load per what we've already tried.

I don't know how mine even updated. I turned it on for all of two seconds to make sure that it worked after it had been unplugged for two days due to floor refinishing. Now it's fried.

Many of us have tried the same thing with the same results. BTW, the 12-Dec-2017 firmware (ver 1020.1) is the latest firmware for the BD-J5100 & BD-J5700. Both of my bricks have been at that version since August 2018.

Haha. I've got one brick. You did one better. You've got 2. In this case less is more 😉

There will be a button press sequence on the unit that forces a firmware update on power on and they will use that once they identify the cause and generate a firmware update to fix it....
